About

cath-headshotLooking for a writer you can trust to deliver work that shines—on time? Or an editor with an eye for detail and accuracy, and an ear for tone? Someone who builds strong relationships with your team?

For more than 20 years, I’ve welcomed writing assignments of all kinds. Some are specifically assigned. Others are stories I pitch that offer a pull I can’t resist—and my instinct tells me readers will feel the same way.

Composing persuasive copy to inspire action and translating science for an everyday audience often come into play for my work. Like any good reporter, I’m comfortable engaging with anyone, whether a  CEO, a science-y marine scientist, or a crusty commercial fisherman.

Some of my favorite interviewees have included:

  • a teacher who taught kids math, science, and history with unusually creative cooking projects (The Washington Post)
  • many generous and fascinating individuals who so graciously support their closely held passions (Ocean Conservancy, The Smithsonian, George Washington University)
  • a brain surgeon whose skill brings quality of life—and often life itself—back to critically ill patients (MD News of Northern Virginia)

Readily capturing the voice of an individual or organization, I home in on just the right details to snare the attention of readers; working with other writers to help them build their own skill is a pleasure.

You name it, I’ve developed, written, edited, or produced it.

I’ve earned a Bachelor’s in English from the University of Virginia and a Master of Arts in Writing from Johns Hopkins, as well as a Publications Specialist Certificate from The George Washington University. I learned about research and the pursuit of accuracy from the best during nearly a decade with National Geographic Magazine. Washington Independent Writers awarded me their Washington Prize for Newsletters.
